A 22-year-old Lafayette, Louisiana man has died following a serious three-vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday morning on W. Gloria Switch Road in Carencro, leaving the local community in mourning.
Carencro Police identified the victim as Marcus Patterson, who sustained critical injuries in the collision and later died at a nearby hospital despite life-saving efforts by medical personnel.
Crash Report and Initial Response
According to Carencro Police, officers were dispatched shortly after 7:00 a.m. to W. Gloria Switch Road near Turf Road in response to reports of a major crash involving three vehicles. Upon arrival, emergency responders found a severe collision scene requiring immediate medical and traffic intervention.
Investigators say Patterson was traveling westbound when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle crossed the center line into oncoming traffic.
Chain-Reaction Collision
Authorities reported that Patterson’s vehicle first struck a truck pulling a trailer that was traveling eastbound. After the initial impact, his vehicle continued forward and collided head-on with a second vehicle.
Police confirmed that the driver and passengers inside the truck and trailer were not injured in the crash. The driver of the second vehicle sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Officials noted that this driver was properly restrained at the time of the collision.
Medical Outcome and Investigation
Patterson was transported from the scene in critical condition but later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Police stated that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
As part of standard procedure in fatal traffic incidents, a toxicology sample was collected. Investigators indicated there is currently no evidence suggesting alcohol was a contributing factor, though final results are still pending.
The crash forced the temporary closure of W. Gloria Switch Road for several hours as investigators documented the scene and cleared debris. The roadway has since reopened.
